Reverend Dr. Mitchell J. Stevens Sr.
Pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church, New Orleans, LA
Reverend Dr. Mitchell J. Stevens was born and raised in Westlake, Louisiana. He’s the son of a preacher, the late Reverend Willie Stevens, Jr. and a loving mother, the late Rose L. Stevens. He is the fifth of seven siblings. He realized early that God had a special call on his life. At the age of seven, he publicly surrendered to God’s will and was baptized by his father at Straightway Baptist Church in Moss Bluff, Louisiana.
After graduating from high school in his home town of Westlake, he attended McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana. He continued his studies at Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music in May 1992. He later completed an advance degree with a Master in Music from Loyola University in Vocal Performance. Pastor Stevens received his Doctoral Degree in Ministry in August 2005 at the Lake Charles Bible College in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
Pastor Stevens’ spiritual journey has been filled with trials and triumphs that have served only to renew and strengthen his faith in the Lord. He preached his first sermon at the St. Thomas Missionary Baptist Church on February 15, 1997. His pastorate began on November 15, 2001 at the Mount Zion Baptist Church of New Orleans. On June 5, 2004 he accepted the call to pastor the Pilgrim Baptist Church of Kenner.
A passionate preacher and gifted teacher, his pastoral leadership has ignited Mount Zion’s growth. We are indeed a “Church Pursuing Excellence”.
In addition to his pastoral service, Pastor Stevens is often called upon to sing as guest soloist at surrounding churches. Pastor Stevens is Assistant Director of Music and Arts, Youth and Children Convention (National Baptist Convention of America, International), the Convention Organist and Missionary for the Lott Carey Foreign Missions Convention, Director of Youth and Children Convention, (Louisiana Home and Foreign Missions Baptist State Convention), General Secretary for the Louisiana Freedmen Missionary Baptist General Association and President, Congress of Christian Education (United Baptist Association). He is also a proud member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated.
In spite of all the many wonderful works he has accomplished, he is most content when he is
motivating people and ministering to their needs through the Word of God. Jesus once told his disciples, "...he that is greatest among you, let him be your servant..." Based on this scripture alone, Pastor Stevens stands out when measured by his service.
There is nothing more prominent than a man with a vision.
He is married to First Lady Kerri Lyn Stevens, who is a woman who exemplifies Godly character and leadership. They are the proud parents of Mitchell J. Stevens II and Mariah Janae’ Stevens.
Pastor Stevens’ testimony is simple yet special, “If I can help somebody as I pass along, then my living shall not be in vain”. He looks to the future with great hope and expectation as the Lord moves him and the Mount Zion family from Victory to Victory.
